Solve Fedora 10 preupgrade-caused logging issues

1: When using {attach:’preupgrade’|http://www.google.com/search?q=f10+preupgrade} (in my case from f7 to f9 and then f9 to f10), you note that your logging will die. The /var/log/messages and /var/log/secure will just remain empty. 2: \\ 3: 4: It appears the issue is that the logging system changed sometime after f7, and there’s a weird dependency-inconstency that prevents removal of the old logging system, prior to installing the new one. I noticed this after seeing a new daemon ’rsyslog’ on fresh-installed fedora 10 systems that didn’t occur on the upgraded ones. I believe you’ll know you have this issue if you do "chkconfig --list | grep log" and nothing comes up. 5: \\ 6: Here’s what I believe i had to do, on two systems, to re-enable logging after upgrade. Warning, brute-force is involved, comments appreciated: 7: 8: \\ 9: <blockquote>{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new,courier}golem-136-~> sudo yum install rsyslog{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}Setting up Install Process{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}Parsing package install arguments{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}Resolving Dependencies{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new,courier}--> Running transaction check{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new,courier}---> Package rsyslog.x86_64 0:3.21.9-1.fc10 set to be updated{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new,courier}--> Processing Conflict: sysklogd conflicts rsyslog{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new,courier}--> Finished Dependency Resolution{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new,courier}sysklogd-1.5-5.fc10.x86_64 from installed has depsolving problems{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier} --> sysklogd conflicts with rsyslog{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}Error: sysklogd conflicts with rsyslog{style}\\\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new,courier}golem-137-~> sudo yum remove sysklogd{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}NOTE: This uninstalls >700 packages: __*don’t do it*__!{style}\\\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new,courier}golem-137-~> sudo rpm -e sysklogd{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}error: Failed dependencies:{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier} syslog is needed by (installed) initscripts-8.86-1.x86_64{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier} syslog is needed by (installed) cronie-1.2-7.fc10.x86_64{style}\\\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new,courier}golem-138-~> sudo rpm -e --nodeps sysklogd{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}error reading information on service syslog: No such file or directory{style}\\\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}## installing, then removing, syslog-ng seems to fix things{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}sudo yum install syslog-ng {style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}sudo yum install rsyslog{style}\\{style:type=span|font-size=12px|font-family=courier new, courier}sudo yum remove syslog-ng{style}\\</blockquote>\\ 10: 11: After reboot, note that the proper behavior of logs happens again!!
